Students will shadow staff neonatologists during their daily routine at the neonatal intensive care unit at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, providing exposure to working with newborns and infants requiring intensive care.

Students will have inpatient or outpatient experience seeing patients with acute and chronic kidney disease, hypertension, kidney stones, and kidney transplants.

The Nephrology service is made up of patients with acute kidney injury; fluid, electrolyte and acid-base problems; renal parenchymal abnormalities with chronic kidney disease; nephrolithiasis and hypertension.

This selective will provide exposure to all aspects of nephrology through participation in patient care and rounds. The student will observe initial evaluation and follow-up care of nephrology patients on the inpatient consult service and nephrology clinic.

This selective experience offers the medical student/learner an opportunity to witness and participate in the care of patients with neurological disorders and the practice of neurology.

Students join the Mayo Clinic Neurology team, assessing patients with acute and chronic neurologic diseases. This selective may include experiences in neurosurgery, neuroradiology, psychiatry and neuropsychological testing, emphasizing the team-based, multidisciplinary approach to these patients.

An online course is paired with a mentor in the Department of Radiology to facilitate an entry-level introduction to modalities and common pathologies seen in neuroradiology, and includes lessons on CT imaging, MRI, intracranial hemorrhage, stroke, and other brain lesions.

This selective will provide exposure to aspects of the Neurosurgery service through participation in ambulatory and inpatient care, rounds, surgical procedures in the operating room and evaluation of new patients in the emergency room and outpatient clinic.
1-2 weeks | Selective
Students participate in patient hospital rounds and in neurosurgical operative cases. Emphasis will be placed on learning the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology appropriate for the surgical case or patient. The student will also gain exposure to the challenges and excitement of the field of neurosurgery.
Longitudinal | Selective
There are a variety of cardiovascular and primary care clinics in the community that provides compassionate care to the homeless and underserved population in Northeast Florida including Sulzbacher Center, Volunteers in Medicine, Mission House, and others. This longitudinal rotation provides an opportunity for the medical student to have an indispensable role in helping to provide that medical care.
