The Rochester Roots of Mayo Clinic

In this immersive selective, you will explore “the liberal arts of Mayo Clinic” – how history, art, architecture and other disciplines form the cultural context of Mayo’s three-shield mission, while visiting a wide range of places and persons in Rochester.

Thoracic Surgery

3-8 weeks | Selective

In the outpatient setting, students take histories and perform physical examinations on at least two to three patients weekly. Initial examinations and interesting cases are stressed. After reviewing each case with the consultant, students assist with ordering tests and procedures, and are present when the patient returns for follow-up.

Transfusion Medicine

1-2 weeks | Selective

This selective will provide the learner with a solid background in immunohematology and transfusion medicine. Introductory rotations will be scheduled through the work units of Transfusion Medicine. A "hands-on" serologic laboratory experience will include basic ABO/Rh, antibody screening, crossmatching, antibody identification, and direct antiglobulin testing.

Transplant

Students will have the opportunity to shadow in Transplant Medicine and Transplant Surgery with exposure to various service lines. These service lines include kidney, heart, lung, liver, and pancreas.

This selective will provide students with exposure to the field of transplant medicine and surgery as a mixed-discipline experience. The goal is to experience the spectrum of transplant medicine from the perspective of the patient.

This opportunity is intended to give exposure to those students who may be interested in a career in transplantation surgery. The students attend surgery, clinical rounds, consultations with patients, and a variety of educational conferences.

Trauma Surgery

1-2 weeks, 3-8 weeks | Selective

University of Florida Health Jacksonville is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Northeast Florida. There are approximately 4,000 trauma evaluations per year, with 18% being penetrating trauma. This rotation is on a busy trauma service and students will be expected to be involved in all aspects of patient care including the initial evaluation of trauma patients, daily rounds, and operative cases.
