The Integrated Community and Rural Surgery Residency program offers an excellent learning experience for residents to develop their decision-making skills under the close guidance of board-certified general surgeons at Mayo Clinic Health System sites in the community and within the Mayo Clinic Rochester campus. Residents will rotate off-campus for 14 clinical rotations in the Mayo Clinic Health System Community. There is an option for one elective rotation during training. 

The Integrated Community and Rural Surgery Residency program strictly adheres to Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) work-hour regulations and focuses on teaching ACGME competencies. You'll have access to appropriate educational conferences, receive excellent supervision, and benefit from meaningful evaluations.

Clinical training

Apart from gaining hands-on surgical training, you'll attend office hours to observe new patients and improve your communication skills with referring colleagues, emergency room staff, medical colleagues, support staff, family, and, most importantly, patients. You'll also get a chance to learn about the business aspects of medicine, including procedural and clinical coding and office management.

• Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin

• Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato
• Children's Minnesota in Minneapolis/St. Paul

Research

If you're interested in research, you can take advantage of Mayo Clinic's world-renowned research opportunities to conduct research relevant to community and rural surgical settings. Although it's not mandatory, you'll be given time to complete peer-reviewed articles.
