Overview

Mayo Clinic in Arizona offers a one-year fellowship in Advanced Head and Neck Microvascular and Reconstructive Surgery in a high-volume, high-acuity, and quaternary healthcare facility.

This fellowship focuses on the state of the art microvascular head and neck reconstructive surgery and maxillomandibular reconstructive and rehabilitative techniques. It is unique with a high volume of microvascular surgical cases and a high volume of Transoral Laser Microsurgery cancer resections. These two surgical techniques defined state-of-the-art head and neck cancer surgery in 2009.

Hear from our fellows

I was fortunate enough to play a role in the fifth successful total laryngeal transplant in the world, and the first in the setting of a laryngeal cancer. Under a team of five faculty surgeons, I got to bear witness to what I can only describe as a surgical concert. From the anesthesiologists to the surgical nurses and technicians, from the surgeons to the medical transplant team, the multi-disciplinary collaboration that transpired over the next 24 hours was a sight to see.

Program history

The Advanced Head and Neck Microvascular and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Arizona was established in 2002. Since that time, one (and at times two) trainees complete the program annually.
