The Obstetrics Hospitalist Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota offers a robust curriculum designed to provide immersive training in clinical and academic leadership for obstetrics and gynecology physicians.

Clinical and research rotations

See the general rotation schedule for the first and second years of the Obstetric Hospitalist Fellowship.

Year one

During the first year of the Obstetrics Hospitalist Fellowship, you spend the initial eleven months on research and completion of graduate courses in order to complete a master's degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology. This program requires a minimum of forty-five credits offered through the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The remainder of the first year is clinical with rotations consisting of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Obstetric Anesthesia.

Year two

The majority of the second year of fellowship consists of clinical rotations in the Family Birth Center. In addition, you will spend time in the Intensive Care Unit where you will care for critically ill patients in the antepartum and peripartum periods.

While rotating at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, you will work in collaboration with community physicians and midwives to assist with patient care, and gain leadership skills. Additional Mayo Clinic site rotations may be offered as an elective opportunity.

One month is spent on the Maternal Fetal Medicine/Ultrasound rotation to gain additional experience in managing high-risk complex patients with medical, obstetrical, and surgical complications. Your time spent in the outpatient ultrasound setting will expand your technical skills and enhance your interpretation of images.

The remainder of the time in your second year will be dedicated to any remaining master's program requirements, research, completing your chosen research project, and submission of your manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Call frequency

In-house shifts on the Family Birth Center in Rochester and in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, will be assigned and work hours will follow the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) work-hour policy. Mayo Clinic complies with these recommendations. There will be no at home call.

Moonlighting

Moonlighting is allowed with program director approval. Moonlighting may not interfere with required learning and program requirements and must not violate the work-hour rules of the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education (MCSGME).

Didactic training

Obstetrics Hospitalist Fellowship didactics will occur on Thursday. Fellows will participate in SOGH fellow didactics, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds/Quality and safety, obstetric anesthesia didactics, neonatology didactics, and journal clubs. During these times, you will be excused from clinical duties.

Fellows also complete the necessary graduate courses in the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. You must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale as required by the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. You will also take a six-week graduate-level pelvic anatomy course.

Research training

Research opportunities at Mayo Clinic are innumerable. As a fellow, you have access to experienced faculty mentors, research coordinators, statisticians, and extensive academic library support. Research efforts are supported by funding and protected time which enhances the scholarly output of research projects and manuscripts. Trip funding is available for oral and poster presentations at annual meetings such as the Society of OB/GYN Hospitalists (SOGH), the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), and others.

Evaluation

To ensure that fellows acquire adequate knowledge and development of technical skills to meet program expectations, performance is monitored carefully during the Mayo Clinic Obstetrics Hospitalist Fellowship. Fellows are evaluated formally by supervising faculty on a quarterly basis. Meetings are held with the program director to review these evaluations and provide feedback. Fellows also regularly evaluate faculty to confirm fellows’ educational needs are being met.
