Overview

As a resident in the three-year Family Medicine Residency at Mayo Clinic Health System — Mankato in Mankato, Minnesota, you will be taught by nationally recognized experts who are passionate and dedicated teachers. Training is broad-based and includes procedures for comprehensive care.

Program highlights include:

  • Individualized education plan to enhance resident elective rotation schedule and community experiences
  • Strong focus on community health and community engagement
  • Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) curriculum over all three years of training
  • Sports and musculoskeletal medicine emphasis with integration of allopathic and osteopathic techniques and imaging
  • Daily didactics, monthly procedure workshops
  • Scholarship incorporated into daily activities
  • Longitudinal training in behavioral and community health
  • Education and training on addiction medicine - all residents complete the 8-hour Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) of Substance Use Disorders training during their first year

Accreditation and certification

The Family Medicine Residency is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), with osteopathic recognition.

After successfully completing this residency, you are eligible to take the Family Medicine Certification Examination offered by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Program history

Our Family Medicine Residency began in Waseca, Minnesota, in 1994. Resident training began at Mayo Clinic Health System — Mankato Hospital in 1995. In the summer of 2005, the residency relocated to Mayo Clinic Health System — Eastridge Clinic in Mankato, Minnesota. July 1, 2022, marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Family Medicine Residency, as the institutional sponsorship transitions from the University of Minnesota to Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education.

Five new residents join the Family Medicine Residency each year for a total of 15 current residents.
