Specialty Tracks

Starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, our residents will be able to enjoy carefully designed specialty tracks. The tracks were developed based on resident feedback on which areas of emergency medicine they enjoy, and which fellowships they are planning to pursue. In addition, tracks were also developed based on clinical expertise at Mayo and to meet the expanding scope of Emergency Medicine.

Specialty tracks are designed to deepen your knowledge of specific areas of emergency medicine, and, in some cases, prepare you for fellowship match. Like a “minor” in college, tracks are offered to all residents but are not required for graduation.

At the end of PGY1, interested residents will be encouraged to apply to one of the specialty tracks that will be done during the post graduate years 2, 3, and 4, to allow for longitudinal experience and engagement throughout your development as an emergency physician. Upon enrollment, all tracks will result in access to additional educational and mentorship resources, leadership roles and a certificate of completion.

Some of the elective and selective time will be used to accommodate track activities including clinical rotations, third-party learning resources, trips abroad and to national conferences, and much more. Generally, residents are encouraged to participate in one track during their training, except for the Indigenous People’s Health Curriculum, that is specially designed to be taken in combination with most tracks as well as by itself.

Our team works hard on offering additional opportunities every year, and we anticipate developing more tracks options the future. As of next academic year, the following tracks will be available:

  • Clinical Innovation and Informatics
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Education
  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Global Health
  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Research
  • Indigenous People’s Health Curriculum (mini track)
