Curriculum

Group of students in a lecture hall, working in groups of two and discussing problem

The Mayo Clinic M.D.-Ph.D. Program is designed to provide complementary clinical and research training that will provide the foundational education needed to become a successfl physician-scientist.

Focused on flexibility

Our curriculum focuses on flexibility. Flexibility allows each student to shape their education to become the physician-scientist they want to be. Because of this, we have designed a variety of flexible options for the timing of clinical and research training within the curriculum. This means that as you navigate between clinical and graduate training, there are customized paths you can take depending on your interests, goals, and personalized educational needs.

Text graphic with information on the flexible curriculum for Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C. All three plans include the first lab rotation, preclinical curriculum (18 months), TCM, and STEP 1. After USMLE Step 1, the plans differ a little bit. Plan A and B offer Graduate School (4.25 years), M3, M4, and the USMLE Step 2, but in different orders. Plan C combines graduate school and M3 (5 years).
